Why is it called 'The Ashes?'

I know nothing of cricket. Why does it happen that a tournament of some sort is called The Ashes?

erm...

A long time ago some team won something big and they burnt the wickets and put them into that little pot that holds the ashes.

Its something to do with some memorial thing of cricket
